light trap

Just imagine the vast world of insects from tiny, inconspicuous ants that soclutteriously infiltrate your personal space to huge beetles you may never see. I remember going camping with my family as a kid, or spending time outside at night and it felt like you were surrounded by so many bugs that seem to be attracted towards the light. It can be quite fascinating! Bernhard used light traps to catch the bugs and study their behaviour very closely, in order to get a better understanding of what was going on.

What is a Light Trap!? A light trap is a device designed to entice in insects with the use of lights. Insects, as you know because they keep slamming into your windshield when the sun goes down in August (or whenever), are drawn to light like moths. Insects think the light is either a moon or stars — something they use to orient themselves and find their way in darkness. Scientists capitalize on this natural behavior by trapping insects with light traps. How smart this was of him to study these creatures!

How to Build Your Own Light Trap

For those who dont believe that these aliens were insects if you want to know more on your own here is how you can easily make a light trap at home! A fun DIY project for the whole family. You need few things to make your own light trap. To do it, take your flashlight or lamp you want to make shiny; a shallow container and something sticky. A small plastic container you can eat out of

Line the container with a sticky substance, such as vaseline or double sided tape so that when insects crawl into it they cannot get back out. This will make sure any bugs that come in the container get caught. Then, set your light directly above the container —this should be at minimum a few feet high (the higher it is the farther down onto the can). After you set it up, turn on the light and wait for these insects to arrive. When they fly down the light source, instead of being able to fly away because they are trapped in a sticky layer inside the container. Kind of like your own backyard experiment!
