He was moving missing his chicken, which by the way who was always right there beside him, and her name is Henrietta. She would follow Jimmy wherever he roamed. Clearly, they have a unique bond that Jimmy cherishes.
Jimmy literally went on about chickens for so long everyone knew how desperately he wanted them. Sometimes friends would needle him for being a "chicken nerd" but he took it all in stride. He adored everything about chickens, their softness and fluffiness — no man had ever called a chick ugly or given one an ill name — with the ceaseless clucking (it was really far more than just cluck; it was actually another word) funny little faces whose flirting eyes were like buttons that made all sorts of sounds out in the yard from minute to minute.
Jimmy and his family were on there way to a chicken show, it was sunny that day so all the windows in their car were down. Big thing where everyone brought every kind of chicken and what not. Heaven to Jimmy! Even the colors, and all those breeds - like fifty different sizes. That day he got to learn a lot about chickens, and also met some other kids who had an interest in chicken as much as himself. It was a big day for Nathan too and this is the time he decided that when he gets his own place someday, they will be having chickens.
He was always careful to refill the water and food bowls each afternoon as Jim knew it was more than important that his chickens had fresh access to both.
